ANIJA UPDATE
Early in February Paul and the other directors
held a planning session
that was very productive. He was encouraged by
the discussion and
direction the team headed in making plans for
changes next year. They
are hoping to increase class time for older
students and expand
enrollment to accommodate for more students
going through our ABC
(Spanish literacy) program. Currently the
Dominican Republic ranks
at the very bottom in Latin America for its
education system. ANIJA
wants to be different.
HAITIAN CHILDREN UPDATE
We had been hoping to help young children from
the earthquake in Haiti
but instead received four teenage boys. Three
had lost their Dads in
the earthquake and walked to the Dominican
Border. They made their
way to the Haitian embassy in Santo Domingo but
were robbed and beaten
up along the way. The fourth boy had come from
Haiti a few years ago
with his mother but was taken in by authorities
here when she failed
to care for him. We are attempting to be a
blessing to them during
their stay with us. However, they have been a
handful and a challenge
for their houseparents, teachers, and the
administration. They still
have family located in Haiti so we do not know
how long they will be
with us. The three who lived through the
earthquake think that they
are in good standing with God because they
survived. Please pray for
God to work in their hearts so they recognize
their need for Him.
KIDS ALIVE HAITI UPDATE
Kids Alive Haiti has applied for NGO
(Non-governmental organization)
status and hopes that once they get it they'll
be able to receive
children orphaned from the earthquake.
Volunteers have built a tent
city to accommodate 50 more children. They are
also hoping to
purchase additional land to start building
permanent homes for the
children they already have. Right now they are
in rented houses.
