Hello!

Wow, it has been a long time since I sent out a family update.  I hope you enjoy the pictures.  As you can tell, Noah is growing up fast!  He is 17 months old and now only has to wear his special brace/shoes when he is sleeping!  He still isn't walking yet, but he is getting braver each day.  Yesterday, I asked him to show Daddy how he can walk and he started "walking" on his knees.  It was pretty cute!  His favourite things to do are watch "Veggie Tales" (actually he just likes the theme song, over and over and over...) and wash dishes (a.k.a. get very wet and make more work for Mommy :)  He is a very vocal child.  He can say many, many words.  Today he handed me an empty bottle of shampoo out of the recycling basket and said, "Open?"  He can say, "get down, please?", umbrella, yep, school, chocolate, bread, button, bear and book among many others!  He is also saying some Portuguese words like, "Luz (light), menina (girl), cao (dog) and obrigado (thank you).  He loves people and often says, "Ola" (hi!) to anyone he sees when we are outside or shopping.  This starts many conversations for me that sometimes I am able to actually follow!  He had brought so much joy to our lives.  He keeps us busy and laughing!

In August we celebrated our 1 year anniversary of being here in Portugal and in September we celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary.  We are very happy here and are starting to feel more "at home."  We do miss our families, but we know this is where we are supposed to be.  School is going well for Nick and I am just beginning to figure out where I fit in here now that language school is over.  I will still be taking some language classes, but only once a week, not every day!  We have done a lot of entertaining since coming to Portugal, so I am finding that my love for cooking and baking is coming in very handy!  I just started leading a girl's Bible study at the school and am enjoying building into their lives.  I would appreciate your prayers for all of us!  One girl is not a believer and is asking many questions, so I am especially praying for her.

Thank you for your love and prayers for our family!  May God bless you all!

Dear Praying Friends,
Today marks the one year anniversary of our arrival in Portugal! It’s a year to be thankful for. Thank you for your prayers and support in our ministry here. We are looking forward to getting more involved in ministries here now that language school is done. Krista is looking forward to helping with a girl’s Bible study in the high school, helping with the babies to age six class in Sunday school, and trying to find more language help in the community. I’m looking forward to the new school year where I’ll be teaching Algebra I and II, Computer Applications, and French as well as helping out in any way I can at our local church. Please pray for us in the coming months as we start the school year and figure out exactly where we should be involved.

Thanks for all your prayers through our time in language school, and a big thank you to Amy Huff and Sarah Burkholder for watching Noah while we were in language school. After studying Portuguese with a tutor for most of the year, we had a 3 week course at a university here. We now have official documents stating that we’ve been working on the language, which helps with visa applications. More importantly, we have a better grasp on the basics of Portuguese so that we can communicate a little better to share the love of God with the people around us. On the last day of language school we had the opportunity to present our testimonies before all the students and teachers in Portuguese. I don’t know if what we said made much sense, but afterwards we had a 30 minute conversation with an Australian man where the gospel was presented much clearer. If anything, some seeds were planted. I’ll just have to rest on the promise that God’s Word never returns void (Isaiah 55:11).

There have been some medical challenges that have been just coming at us on a regular basis. Krista had a minor infection, but after some ultrasounds the doctors found some vascular deformation in her liver and gall stones. Both are minor according to the doctor but they have caused some pain and discomfort. Also after years of a toothache that has come and gone, Krista has finally had a root canal that should take care of it.
